THE RED RAIL
Ellen benders
"Blood is the red thread through your body. You cannot be without. I designed a happy dress, a real treat for those who deserve it!"
Ivona Batuta
"Giving blood is giving something essential it is an act of sharing life. The outfit created is expressing nobility of such an act, somewhat regal and angelic. It celebrates and pays honors to the donor, as the act of giving blood is truly selfless and a charitable deed, for fellow human beings, expressing the idea that humanity is a brotherhood."

“As a designer I find it interesting not only to be preoccupied with appearance, but also using my creativity to raise awareness of certain issues. Just like The Red Rail project, I can do what I love most and thereby help the foundation. My outfit contains a red cape/blouse and casual trousers from old pink tricot.”

"The act of giving. The expectation to receive blood when you are in need must be the same as giving blood when another is in need. Our expectation must be the truth.”
Ose Cornelisse
“My motivation to participate in the project is the shortage of blood donors The Red Rail addresses. The certainty that blood is always there when you need it is one that appears not to be completely true. When my participation in this project has a positive contribution to the awareness of the problem my mission will be accomplished! The design I've made for The Red Rail collection is a direct visual translation of what a blood donor is, not only the blood but also the person who gives the blood. A blank donorcard indicates that we are still looking for donors so…Fill in your name!”

Blood is the greatest thing and our body is rich in it, it gracefully rolls through your system. Elegantly descending and powerfully climbing; always on the go; in a humble service to your body. I think it is your human duty to share this wealth of healthy blood. Only when you realize how desperatly some people need it, do you realize what an incredibley small effort it is to give.
Ester van kempen
“My designs were created because I started customising old clothes, old socks, painted tops and worn-out jeans. The same process happens when you give your blood to someone who desperately needs it. You can help someone build up a new and inspiring life!”

“Volcano outfit: The design I created is based on the idea that we are so vulnerable to nature that one needs a coincidence and fate when it comes to requiring blood. In other words, a volcano erupting, an earthquake, a flood, the need for blood: it can also happen to you.”

“I like when fashion gets integrated into social projects. When as a designer I can help people by creating something beautiful. My outfit is a set of a mens and a womans outfit. I thought of the moment of sharing, almost as if the clothes made love once and now there are still traces of that moment. It is clear that they belong together that they were once one.”

“If you think about it, the human health is extremely vulnerable. By donating blood we can make sure that something of this vulnerability will be eliminated. Together we stand strong. In my work for the Red Rail project, I chose to let this vulnerability come back in the material by using thin jersey and self-designed knits.”
Studio Jux
“Giving is good. That someone is grateful. Receiving is beautiful as well. The best thing is giving and receiving, in perfect balance. You give blood, you get life. Jux loves giving. Giving to charity and to you a beautiful garment. Jux loves receiving. A grateful tailor, a consumer laughing. Both created by a balanced outfit.”
Ignoor
"I must confess that I belong to the target group of THE RED RAIL project… Before I was asked to participate in this project I never thought of the possibility to become a donor, though naturally I’d expected that there would be blood available when I might need it... really stupid!
Through my participation in the project, I became more aware and I registered as a donor.
Blood = "The Circle of Life". A precious gold which anyone can give free of charge and give life to anyone who desperately needs it."

"Giving is a wealth by itself. Giving nothing is poverty. Everyone has blood, but for giving blood you need to possess the gift of philanthropy. Love is wealth. The theme, giving, makes us think of wealth and a grand gesture. In order to emphasize that in our design, we used organic shapes and a modified neckpiece with stones.”
Studio Codex
"In 2008 Mendie Karagantcheff graduated from the KABK The Hague. After graduating she started working under the name Studio Codex and focuses on designing for men. The work has an open nature and is characterized by a bright, graphic style> The purpose of Studio Codex is to raise the level of streetwear. Studio Codex works for The Red Rail with the motto:"Give blood, give life" and contributes a warm heart to the idealistic approach of the project.

“My outfit for the Red-Rail Project has been inspired by the ripple that occurs when a drop falls into a puddle. Each drop brings motion to the surface, so even the smallest donation counts.”
Hellen van Rees
“Blood donation is something I've never really thought about, as opposed to organ donation. Strange, because actually it's something that’s more obvious. I hope my outfit helps to increase awareness of the need for blood donors and that thanks to this project a lot of people will consider to be a blood donor. My outfit is a representation of giving something from yourself, blood, thereby increasing its destination, maybe even saving a live, so you also grow as a person. This is illustrated by the layered, growing top of my design.”
Irene Heldens
"Everyone knows an example where blood transfusion was needed but tomorrow it could happen to you and you’ll hope to receive it yourself.
My design is about the struggle between the ability to give and that which stops you from becoming a blood donor. The warm colors and soft fabrics illustrate ‘the act of giving’ together with the leather straps to show the fear, ignorance and restriction.
Get the most out of life and give life the best of you.”
Barbara van der Zanden
Welcome
The Red Rail is a project initiated by Stichting Nobel with the aim to create a new generation of blood donors by promoting the act of giving.
As these items have been created with this spirit in mind, they can’t be bought with money. If you want to have them, you have to pay with your own gift to someone else, your blood.
The pieces will be presented during the Amsterdam International Fashionweek at Westergasfabriek on July 16th at 13.00.
